It was last winter during my senior year in high school. I was apart of the basketball program in my school (Mount Ayr) and a lot of people had high expectations for our team because we had played together for so long and we had a new coach the year before. We had just started our season and were doing ok by winning our first two games then had a close lost to our rival. We came back and won an easy game then lost to a team that we should have beat easily. Everyone was now feeling really down about how the season might turn out now if we lost to a easy team and to make matters worse we had a pretty tough opponent coming up that had really improved over the years by getting new kids to there school, East Union.
There was a lot riding on this game because if we could come back with a win it would show a lot about our team especially with East Union supposedly to be one of the top contending teams in our conference that year. So with the game starting it was a close battle the whole time, both teams going back and forth. They would get ahead a couple points then we would make a run and get ahead again. Going into half time there was only a couple points separating us. With such a tight game it wasn't long into the third quarter that fouls started to take a toll on me and my fellow team mates as well as the other team. We had to be more cautious and had to dig into our depth chart.
When the fourth quarter came around it was still close an everyone was playing there hearts out. I had just got subbed out cause I was tired when one of my friends got his fifth foul and the coach put me back in. I was tired already from playing a lot of the game, but this close of a game gave me a ton of adrenaline and I found a second wind. Back and forth we went till East Union had the ball and ran some clock out and hit a huge shot to put them ahead by one point with only twelve seconds left. We instantly called a time out and coach drew up a play that was going to hopefully work were I would get the ball then run down and try and hit the high low look. There was a lot of pressure on my shoulders to get the ball inside an hopefully win the game. With the ball inbounded I ran down the court and started to perform the play, but to my horrific view they were face guarding the post so intensely I would have never got the pass in, being freaked out I passed the ball quickly to the side, but got it straight back from the younger player, so I took charge. I drove to the only place I could, towards the right half, and felt instinct that cant be describe and put up a jump shot right over a defenders tall hands. What seemed like slow motion after the shot was the most amazing feeling of my life as the ball went into the net with a whoosh and the buzzer going off as we had won the game. I could help but jump around and yell as I had hit the winning shot. There is no feeling like that.

Cory,
ReplyDeleteThat is respectable man, I wish I could have gotten to see it. Well, although I have never played sports I still know that feeling you described. There truely is no feeling like it whether you get it from winning the big game or a number of different outlets. Thats an awesome experience and a great one to share. I'll catch you in class!
Zach
Cory I'm sure that was the most amazing feeling in the world. My friend did that once and reacted in a similar way. I'm sure it's a memory you will never forget!
ReplyDeleteCory, it takes a true leader to do what you did. I'm sure a lot of people look up to you and that's an aweseome feeling! I wish I could've been there to see the game:)

ReplyDeleteIt takes a log of guts to take control of a game like that and not "choke" in the pressure. I would of loved to seen your reaction after you made the basket.
nice dude that is ballsy. It really is hard to stay calm under that knid of pressure and come through for the team and all the hometown fans.
ReplyDeleteThat has got to be one of the most amazing feeling to have. I had a similar experience in middle school. There is nothing that compares to the way it makes you feel.

ReplyDeleteThat's one of the greatest feelings to have winning a big game. It must have taken a lot to take control of a close game in the final seconds.
ReplyDeleteI have a similar experience to this. It truely is one of the greatest feelings. Especially when everybody in the crowd is going crazy.
ReplyDeleteYour story gave me goosebumps! That must have been such an amazing feeling that I'm sure will stay with you forever. Congrats on the shot! :)
ReplyDeleteThe way you managed to pull out a shot like that in a game which probably had you drained was awesome. I really liked how you just went ahead even though you didn't have much in the line of options.
ReplyDeleteWow! That is really great! Sounds like it was a great game. Being able to think and perform in high pressure is a really good trait to have.
ReplyDeleteLol, you totally got to live out the thing so many of us practice in our driveway court. Good stuff, Corey.
